Jazz Ensemble at 2026 Detroit Jazz Festival

The State Champion 2025-26 NHS Jazz Ensemble has been invited to perform at the 47th Annual Detroit Jazz Festival! The DJF is the largest free jazz festival in the world. We have performed at this festival since its founding over 45 years ago, longer than any professional or amateur band in the history of the festival.

The Jazz Ensemble performs at TIME TBA indoors at the Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center in Downtown Detroit. View the program book and full lineup on the DJF website. Students will either need to drive themselves, have parents transport them, or carpool with others. There are no buses or trucks/trailer from NHS to Downtown Detroit. The closest parking to the Valade Jazz Center are the nearby surface parking lots or Structure 8. The following parking instructions are listed in the DJF website FAQs:

Week of June 8

Band Room open at 8:00 AM, report to Downtown Northville at 9:00 AM, and Parade at 10:00 AM. Wear Band Polo with any shorts/pants and marching shoes/closed-toe athletic shoes.

The performance will be in the Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center, same as last year. We have not been informed of a performance time. More details are forthcoming as they are provided to the band directors.

  • Attire: Dressy/“Sunday Best” – refer to Band Packet page 5
    • Dress in nice, respectable attire. Be classy and appropriate. Avoid casual clothing. Think of dressing up for the Homecoming Dance, a religious service, or a special outing. Any colors are fine.
    • Ladies: dresses, skirts, or slacks with blouses or other nice tops.

  • Attire: Summer Uniform – Band Polo tucked into black dress pants with black belt (if needed), long black socks, marching shoes.
  • Band Room Open: 8:00 AM
  • Report: 9:00 AM
  • Report Location: Tipping Point Theatre Parking Lot (Cady & Griswold Intersection) in Downtown Northville
  • Parade: 10:00 AM
  • Ceremony: 11:00 AM in Rural Hill Cemetery
  • Ice Cream: Casterline Funeral Home Parking Lot after Ceremony
  • The band marches the parade, which briefly stops at Oakwood Cemetery, then proceeds to Rural Hill Cemetery for the Memorial Day Ceremony, briefly stopping at the bridge before entering. The band performs A Salute to Freedom, You’re a Grand Old Flag, and God Bless America during the parade, and God Bless America and the Star Spangled Banner during the ceremony. Water is distributed to the band at Rural Hill. The band is dismissed after the ceremony, and Guernsey provides free ice cream to all in the Casterline Funeral Home parking lot. Return instruments to NHS on Tuesday.

  • Music Leadership Workshop in Orchestra/Ensemble Room 132 @ 6:00 – 7:00 AM with Dr. Ray-Hepp. These optional workshops held on Thursday mornings are open to all NHS music students.

  • AN “ALL-AMERICAN” SPRING CONCERT:

This is Mrs. Taylor’s final concert before her retirement at the end of this school year after teaching band at Meads Mill for 30 years! We encourage everyone to attend this special evening.

This Week’s Schedule

  • Drumline Performance @ Lacrosse Victory Day Game.
  • The Band Room will NOT be open for drum pickup prior to the game. All participating Drumline members were supposed to have taken their drums home after returning from State Band Festival on Friday.
  • Report to 8 Mile “Northville Sports Den” Stadium @ 10:40 AM in Drumline Hoodie. Perform @ 10:50 AM and throughout game @ 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM.
  • Pizza provided afterwards.
  • TUXEDO RETURN @ 7:30 – 8:30 AM and 2:20 – 4:00 PM.
    • Return Tuxedos (jacket and pants only) during seminar or after-school during the specified return windows. Tuxedo Shirts and Bowties are student-owned; keep and reuse for the coming years. Non-Jazz Seniors are welcome to donate their Tuxedo Shirt and Bowtie back to the Band if they wish.
    • Jazz Ensemble members keep their Tuxedo for summer performances, but those who needed replacements throughout the year should return their Tuxedo articles that no longer fit. All others must return all articles of their Tuxedos on this day within the return windows, no exceptions.
    • If you are unable to bring your Tuxedo within the return windows, you are responsible for having a friend/parent bring it within the return windows.
    • You are responsible for paying to have your Tuxedo professionally dry cleaned if you miss the return windows.
    • Students will be assessed fees of $200 for Tuxedo Jacket and $90 for Tuxedo Pants if they are missing.
    • SENIORS: Any missing uniform pieces will result in your graduation cap/gown and diploma being held until you return the pieces or pay the necessary fees.

Week of April 27

Symphonic Band 9/10 reports to the Band Room at 8:00 AM in Summer Uniform, performs at Belding HS at 12:45 PM, and returns to NHS by 4:00 PM. There are 2 of 4 bus chaperone slots filled for SB 9/10, but 2 more would be best so we have 2 per bus.

Symphonic Band 11/12 reports to the Band Room at 10:00 AM in Tuxedo, performs at Belding HS at 3:10 PM, and returns to NHS by 6:30 PM. There are 3 of 4 bus chaperone slots filled for SB 11/12, but 1 more would be best so we have 2 per bus.

Please contact your counselor to make a change to your schedule to join the class. The bulk of the band this year is made up of seniors who will be graduating on May 31. It is up to the underclass students to take advantage of this opportunity! The directors will provide a jazz instrument and help you learn it if you do not know how to play one already.

  • Music Leadership Workshop in Orchestra/Ensemble Room 132 @ 6:00 – 7:00 AM with Dr. Ray-Hepp. These optional workshops held on Thursday mornings are open to all NHS music students.

  • Attire: Concert Uniform
    • Symphonic Band 9/10: Band Polo tucked into black dress pants (no jeans, sweatpants, yoga pants, etc…), black belt (if needed), long black socks (without logos), and marching shoes.
    • Symphonic Band 11/12: Tuxedo (jacket, pants, shirt, bowtie), long black socks (without logos), and marching shoes.
  • Location: Belding High School – 850 Hall St, Belding, MI 48809
  • Symphonic Band 9/10: Attend 1B class; Dismissed from 1B at 7:45 AM; Report to Band Room in Summer Uniform at 8:00 AM; Perform at 12:45 PM; Return to NHS by 4:00 PM.
  • Symphonic Band 11/12: Attend 1B and 2B classes; Dismissed from 2B at 9:45 AM; Report to Band Room in Tuxedo at 10:00 AM; Perform at 3:10 PM; Return to NHS by 6:30 PM.
  • From NHS, students are bussed to and from festival. Students must ride the bus to festival. Percussion and larger instruments are transported via trailer. The trailer will go with SB 9/10 and return with SB 11/12. SB 9/10 brings all percussion instruments that are also needed for SB 11/12. All other instruments are transported via bus. Students are responsible for ensuring that the instrument and equipment they specifically use are loaded and unloaded from the trailer and buses, and safely transported to and from festival. Students may return from festival with parents, but must notify Mr. Kollipara & Mr. Rumbell before leaving.
  • Drumline @ Lacrosse Victory Day Game…NOTE TIME CHANGE BELOW!!!
  • Report to 8 Mile “Northville Sports Den” Stadium @ 10:40 AM in Drumline Hoodie. Perform @ 10:50 AM and throughout game from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM.
  • Pizza provided afterwards.

Symphonic Band 9/10 reports to the Band Room at 8:00 AM in Summer Uniform, performs at Belding HS at 12:45 PM, and returns to NHS by 4:00 PM. Chaperones are needed for SB 9/10! There is only ONE of 4 slots filled.

Symphonic Band 11/12 reports to the Band Room at 10:00 AM in Tuxedo, performs at Belding HS at 3:10 PM, and returns to NHS by 6:30 PM. Chaperones are needed for SB 11/12! There is only ONE of 4 slots filled.

Please contact your counselor to make a change to your schedule to join the class. The bulk of the band this year is made up of seniors who will be graduating on May 31. It is up to the underclass students to take advantage of this opportunity!
